A couple months ago my friend had decided to start a book club based on a cocktail book called A Coupe of Thorns and Rose: Romantasy Cocktails to Quench Your Thirst: A Cocktail Recipe Book by Pop Press. They decided on the name of our club to be Libations and Publications. We had an introductory meeting to get acquainted, understand our reading preferences, and to pick our first book. The first two books I had not reviewed on the blog due to my blog not being created yet. However, going forward I would like to post reviews of the books going forward.

The third book my book club had decided on was Bride by Ali Hazelwood. I had heard the craze surrounding this book, but had never picked it up prior. I have read other novels from this author, which I enjoyed, so I was hopeful that I would also like this one. Now the cocktail the book recommends is a traditional old fashion, but we decided to go do a special take on an old fashion instead to cater to our preferences with drinks.

I found this book to be entertaining and fun to read, despite some hesitation toward the Omega verse content within it. The characters will not be added to my favorite characters list, but were enjoying to read about. Never once was annoyed with the characters thoughts or actions and they were believable. Misery as a main character was witty and funny while also providing a realistic reaction to traumatic events. Lowe wasn’t my favorite love interest, but he never strayed into the realm of dislike.

The romance in this book had me giggling and kicking my feet. It even made me blush at times. It does seem juvenile through most of it, but it was also made clear that this was the first romance that Misery had ever experienced. And let’s be real, who’s first romance isn’t juvenile?

Now the most disappointing part of the book was the climax of the story happens off page. The main character just describes what happened after the fact which left me feeling unsatisfied with it. What’s the point of providing a huge plot twist that you were building up to for the majority of the book only to be cut to after the big fight and resolution? Not my cup of tea, but this was this authors first step out of contemporary romance so I can cut some slack with that.

Overall, this book was a fun read, but does not beat my favorites in the Fantasy-Romance genre by any means.

3.5/5 stars.

If you end up reading, I’d love to hear your opinions as well!

Much Love,

P. J. Munds
